Defensive Driving Course Florida

The Florida Statutes, authorizes drivers who are 55 years of age or older to complete a Defensive Driver Course, also known as Mature Driver (Senior Citizen) Discount course that is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Upon successful completion of the course, the driver can provide the completion certificate to their insurance company for an insurance discount. The amount of the discount is at the discretion of each insurance company and will typically last for three years as long as the driver: Is not involved in a crash for which the insured is cited; and Is neither convicted, nor pleads guilty or nolo contendere (no contest) to a moving violation.

As drivers gets older, they might become unable to continue safely driving. The Florida DMV does have a specific form to report a driver whose ability is questionable (click here for the Florida DMV Form 72190). Drivers over 80 years of age will need to submit this vision examination form when they renew their driver license (click here for the Florida DMV Form 72119).

The Defensive Driver Program has been created to promote safety and refresh driver knowledge. As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility, strength, range of motion and even height may make us less comfortable and reduce our control behind the wheel. Engineers who design vehicles and roadways are making improvements to adapt to these demands, but older drivers themselves can take measures to better understand their vehicle’s safety features and achieve their safest “fit.”
